Aged 29 and an Aquarius, Fabian Burri has the characteristics that define his astrological sign: independent, he values his freedom and leads, so to speak, an unconventional life, that said, without pejorative connotation on our part.
Indeed, with an apprenticeship in painting, his daily life is far from being that of the usual metro-work-sleep. Adventurer at heart, he lives his life as he wishes, traveling to the four corners of the world to participate in ultra-cycling races and only works during his short stays in Switzerland in order to be able to finance this rhythm as well as possible. of life.
After having participated in the Oman, Corsica and IncaDivide events of the BikingMan© series in 2018, but also in the Northcape 4000© and the TuscanyTrail©, this ultra-cyclist has decided to take part in all the BikingMan© races in 2019. After his return from the IncaDivide© and before his departure for Portugal, in which Clément Mahé, domiciled on the Coast, will also participate, we went to interview Fabian to find out a little more about him.
Fabian, when and how did you start ultra-cycling?
I started cycling when I was still a kid. Over the years, I have been interested in different modalities such as triathlon, freeride, downhill or even BMX. The taste for ultra-cycling only came to me two years ago after traveling by bike through France, Austria, Italy and Germany with a friend.
How did your family and friends react to this enthusiasm for such a demanding sport?
My mom always encouraged me to do what I wanted. Unfortunately she could not support me financially but morally, she was always there! My friends took it well, they consider me crazy, especially because of the distances covered and the lack of sleep during the races, but they are always there for me to support me!
How do you train for these kinds of events?
I don't have time to train specifically because I'm running out of time. When I'm in Switzerland, I have to work as much as possible but I try to ride a minimum of 250 km per week and do long weekend rides. I think having done so much sport as a child gave me a solid base of endurance!
What makes you enjoy BikingMan© events so much?
I discovered these on social networks. When I saw that they were organizing a race in February in Oman, I thought that would be an excellent reason to go and visit this country in which I would probably not have visited otherwise. I also appreciated being able to run in pleasant and warm climatic conditions in the middle of winter at home! I think it's a good way to start the season.
Axel, the organizer and I quickly became very close. The organization of the races is very well done but there are still aspects that I think he should review such as supplies and accommodation. Afterwards, it's his baby, he cares about it, I know he's doing the best he can and I'm not going to complain!
The IncaDivide© is 1650 km for 32 mD+ in the mountains of Peru! You have to believe that you enjoyed the experience last year, since you went there again this year! Why that ?
It was my first visit to South America in 2018 and I fell in love with the landscapes and all the differences between there and Europe! I went back because it is one of the longest and most difficult races (particularly because of the altitude) on the circuit! In addition, I tolerate heat and wind well but rain and cold are my enemies, so I wanted to confront these elements again! Unfortunately, not having reached the third checkpoint on time this year, I had to withdraw.
How do you manage your diet on the ultra-distance? As a vegan, isn't it more difficult for you to find the necessary intakes?
I became vegan when I was 17. I did very little compthen. I did it for ethical reasons and not for my health, so I don't really pay much attention to the nutritional values of what I eat and it never bothered me! I think there are a lot of myths around there. For example, on the IncaDivide© I was perfectly able to eat "arroz a la cubana" throughout the race and I had everything I needed: rice, fried bananas and sometimes chickpeas.
For you the season is still far from over! What are your next goals?
I will participate in BikingMan© Portugal at the end of September, then I will do the Japanese Odyssey© in mid-October before flying to Taiwan for a final BikingMan© event in early November. Finally I will end the year with the Across Andes©.
Ultimately, the fly of ultra-cycling is wreaking havoc in the world of the little queen. With a calendar that is growing more and more by offering races of all kinds, ranging from 200 km of initiation to bikepacking to the pioneering Transcontinental Race ©, everyone will have something to enjoy in the future 😉
