If deconfinement is looming in several countries, and in particular in Europe, the rules of security and social distancing are maintained, for an indefinite period. What about cycling?
The first wave of deconfinement begins on May 11. The practice of an individual sport outdoors is now authorized without certificate, without time restriction and within the limit of a distance of less than 100 km from the home, subject to respecting the rules of social alienation, regardless of the department. Gatherings should be limited to no more than 10 people.
Team and contact sports are still prohibited for the moment, and the practice of professional sports can resume on an individual basis only.
Belgium began its gradual deconfinement on May 4. A new level has just been crossed, this Sunday, May 10, with in particular the reopening of shops and the authorization to find loved ones in a restricted committee (4 people maximum, always the same).
The next stage of deconfinement will take place on May 18. The government has yet to determine the measures for the resumption of sports training outside. Until then, the rules are similar to those in force during confinement: cycling alone or with a loved one, always the same, and respect a safety distance of several meters.
Since April 16, the measures to combat the coronavirus have been relaxed. From May 11, many establishments are reopened: shops, schools, public transport, museums, sports facilities, etc.
With regard to sports practices, mass sports without body contact are again authorized, with groups of a maximum of 5 people, as well as compcompetition or in the professional leagues. However, matches remain prohibited.
Concretely group cycling is therefore allowed again, subject to respecting security measures and not exercising with more than 4 other people.
For your safety, that of your brothers and sisters, and that of your fellow citizens, it is crucial to respect certain rules. The French government recommends in particular respect a distance of at least 10 meters between two cyclists or joggers. In order to protect the people you meet, and especially those at risk, keep good habits. Don't cough in the open, stop right next to a pedestrian or another cyclist, spit on the ground, etc.
With the deconfinement and the subsequent resumption of professional activity, the question of home-work journeys must be asked. Cycling is a great way to get to work safely. Compcompared to that encountered in public transport, the probability of being contaminated by the coronavirus is indeed much lower, provided that, as always, the regulatory safety distances are respected.
Also beware of passers-by: you can be a healthy carrier of the coronavirus and therefore potentially contagious.
Except in Belgium where the gathering is always limited to 2 people, it is therefore now possible to cycle in groups (5 people maximum in Switzerland, 10 people maximum in France).
However, safety distances must be respected between each cyclist. Let's not forget that, even if they have no symptoms, a person can very well be a carrier of the virus and infect their fellow athletes. If the risks of complication are less for young cyclists, generally in good health, they increase with age. Whether it's people in your group or cyclists you meet on your way, applying the safety instructions allows you to limit the risk of contagion and protect others.
In addition to being a gentle and non-polluting means of transport, and offering a safe alternative to public transport, cycling is an excellent activity for physical and mental health. With the deconfinement and the relaxation of measures, its practice can gradually resume, especially in an intensive sports setting, as long as everyone respects the others as well as the safety instructions.

16/05/2020 à 22:59Following the meeting of the National Security Council on May 13, it was decided that sports training could resume in clubs from May 18 with a maximum of 20 participants. Riding in a group will therefore be authorized from this date, but under certain conditions.
The group of cyclists or mountain bikers must be a maximum of 20 people. Before departure, it will be necessary to appoint a group manager who will be responsible for ensuring compliance with health and safety rules and in particular social distancing (minimum 1,5 m minimum between each member of the group, 5 m recommended). It is forbidden to lend drink cans to each other and it is imperative to return home immediately after the hike. Cafeterias and locker rooms must remain closed.
