Cannondale introduced the Scalpel HT hardtail to their Scalpel line of cross-country bikes, previously compDared only from models with full suspension.
The latest addition to the lineup follows in the footsteps of its full-suspension sibling, the 2021 Cannondale Scalpel, with a supple, trail-focused mountain bike geometry.
The numbers are shown by a 65,5-degree head tube angle and proportional chainstay lengths that increase by 5mm for each Scalpel HT size.
It also has a new low seatstay design, meant to smooth out the ride, and similar to the trademark SAVE micro-suspension seen on the Cannondale F-Si, the model this bike will replace.
Unsurprisingly, the Scalpel HT is built around 29-inch wheels front and rear, but now gets anywhere from 100mm to 110mm of travel on the front wheels depending on the model.
This Scalpel HT 2022 will be available in four configurations.
The most expensive Scalpel HT Hi-MOD 1 gets the brand's lightest carbon material, with a claimed frame weight of 895g fitted with Shimano's XTR M9100 mountain bike groupset priced at €6.
The cheapest version, the Scalpel HT Carbon 4, is sold for €2 fitted with the Shimano Deore M499.
The 2022 Scalpel HT was designed with a focus on low weight and Cannondale claims the flagship frame weighs 895g. This is the mid-size Hi-MOD version, painted in the lightest black color, without axle, seat clamp, headset etc.
The lack of weight is impressive and should appeal to the bike's target audience; riders looking to get on the race podium or (repeatedly) uphill.
Internal gear cables use a full-length outer cable as standard, as is usually the case on internally routed bikes, but can also be modified to use interrupted cables in an effort to further reduce weight.
Any weight savings would be minimal, but by the end of the XC races, the extra gains could add up. This feature might appeal to riders looking to keep their weight down to the extreme and don't mind having to change gear cables regularly.
Although the press material does not mention Cannondale's SAVE micro-suspension seen, on the old Scalpel, by name, the new model has "sculpted flex zones" in the chainstays, paired with lowered seatstays to ensure conformity from the back on the pitch of chatter.
I tested the Cannondale Trail SE 4, which dropped the stays similar to the new Scalpel HT, and noticed how great it felt on the trails. Hopefully the Scalpel has inherited some of the calm inherent in this model.
Elsewhere, the Hi-MOD and standard carbon frames share the same standard PF30-83 bottom bracket and tapered head tube. They are both equipped with SRAM’s UDH and use a 55mm chainline.
The frame is also compatible with dropper posts, with cable routing options, but none of the stock models come equipped with a dropper post from the factory.
The front wheel is equipped with a sensor that connects to Cannondale's smartphone app to provide information such as current speed, route and distance traveled, in addition to recording your bike and reminding you when it needs fixing, among other features.
Although the exact specifications of the sensor are not listed, it is co-branded and co-developed with Garmin.
The sensor is fitted to the entire range of Scalpel HT bikes, from the most affordable to the most expensive.
The range of four scalpel sizes (small to extra large) features geometry that wouldn't have felt out of place on a more hardcore, trail-focused hardtail just a few years ago.
However, only the most expensive Hi-MOD 1 bike comes factory-equipped with a 110mm-travel fork. The extra travel lifts the front end and pushes the XC hardtail geometry into new territory with a 66,5 degree head tube angle.

2022 Cannondale Scalpel HT 110 Geometry Chart
Chainstay length for both travel versions increases as bike size increases, dubbed Proportional Response by Cannondale. Base lengths start at 430mm and go up to 445mm, increasing in 5mm increments per increase in size.
Effective and actual seat tube angles remain virtually the same for all sizes and travels of the Scalpel, with the longer-travel bike having slacker angles, again thanks to the increased front-end height. The numbers hover around the 74,5 degree mark.
The latest Scalpel HT comes in four different builds, with the highest performing bike using the Hi-MOD carbon fiber frame, rather than the standard Cannondale Carbon seen on the remaining models.
Topping the line is the Scalpel HT Hi-MOD 1, fitted with the 120mm travel Lefty Ocho 110 carbon fork with 50mm offset, Shimano M9100 12-speed drivetrain and Cannondale finishing kit in ultra-lightweight carbon fiber. It costs €6.
The underperforming Scalpel HT Carbon 4 features a RockShox SID SL 100mm fork with 44mm offset, Shimano Deore M6100 12-speed drivetrain and a host of Cannondale aluminum parts for complighten construction, priced at €2.
