The electrically assisted bicycle (VAE) continues to grow in popularity and it is therefore not difficult to imagine why the second-hand market is increasingly present in the minds of future buyers. Yes, pedelecs are bicycles to which we have added a battery and an electric motor. You still have to pedal, as usual, but the motor can give you a boost if needed, which is very handy on climbs, for example. The electric bike is particularly suitable for daily journeys, to get to work avoiding traffic jams. But it has a downside: its cost. Buying a second-hand VAE is the perfect solution for limited budgets, provided you don't get tricked.
Before buying a second-hand e-bike, you should always check some specifics. Prices that are too low can indeed hide a technical defect, a battery at the end of its life or stolen bike sale.
It is she who will provide the power necessary for pedal assistance. The more capacity the bicycle battery has, the further you can travel without having to recharge it. However, the lifespan of a lithium battery (which equips the majority of pedelecs) depends on the number of times the battery is charged and discharged. We then speak of cycles. The more cycles the battery has gone through, the closer it is to end of life.
You can roughly estimate the number of battery cycles based on its range and the mileage of the bike. You will only have to compcompare the result with the battery life given by the manufacturer (in cycle also) in order to estimate if the purchase of this second-hand electric bike will be profitable for you.
Check each part of the bike carefully: the wear of the chain and the cassette, for example, which are very stressed by the VAE and which often need to be changed. Don't forget to take a good look at the wear of the tires, and the condition of the wheels and axles. The steering should have no play.
A reputable seller will normally have replaced excessively worn parts and can provide you with the maintenance history of the bike.
Pay special attention to the bike's assist, because that's where it all comes down to it. If it has any bumps or scratches, beware! And it must not have been opened, because that means someone tried to tamper with it, and you will lose the guarantee if it was still valid.
Last, but not least, be sure to ask the seller if the warranty is still running and, if so, if it is transferable to the new buyer. This composante normally plays on the selling price: a recent bike still under warranty will be more valuable than a bike that has already lost its warranty.
You can start by asking people around you, because it is always more pleasant to do this type of transaction with someone you know and trust.
Otherwise, there are sites specializing in the purchase and sale of used bikes. Be sure to look for ads on a quality website, which provides all the necessary details: starting purchase price, model, year of construction, size, type of assistance, type of battery, weight, wheel dimensions, etc.
Each element will give you an idea of the condition of the bike, but is also important for your own comfort: a bike that is too big can, for example, give you lower back pain.
It depends on your budget. The second-hand electric bike has the advantage of being ecological, since it is given a second life, and of being economical: you can save substantial sums compared to the original price. If you can afford to buy a new bike, start by looking at the used market! You might find the rare pearl, the bike that has only been used three times, in perfect condition and at a reduced price. And if you do not find your happiness in the Used e-bikes, you can always turn to a new electric bike.
